SWB’s January In Books

Square Divider

Good morning! How’s everyone doing? January seemed to go on forever, and yet at the same time I can’t believe we’re already heading into the second month of 2021! January was a bit of a mixed month for me, I’ve really struggled with this latest lockdown, but I managed to focus on some reading at least, and honestly reading The Gilded Ones was amazing!

What I Read This Month

Titles link to the book’s Goodreads page – Links to reviews are included if I’ve been organised to post them already!

The Highland Falcon Thief by M. G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman – Middle Grade Mystery – Review + The Cousins by Karen M. McManus – Young Adult Mystery – Review + The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna – Young Adult Fantasy – Review to come + The Switch by Beth O’Leary – Adult Contemporary – Review to come

Book Of The Month

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriarchal ancient kingdom, where a woman’s worth is tied to her purity, and she must bleed to prove it. But when Deka bleeds gold – the colour of impurity, of a demon – she faces a consequence worse than death. She is saved by a mysterious woman who tells Deka of her true nature: she is an Alaki, a near-immortal with exceptional gifts. The stranger offers her a choice: fight for the Emperor, with others just like her, or be destroyed…

My Bookish Stats

I’m doing things a little differently with my stats this year! Keeping it simple. I’m going a little old school with my reading tracking so I’m not really using Goodreads, I’ve got a reading journal instead so no Goodreads challenge for me!

Pages read this month: 1336
2021 releases: 1
Backlist reads: 3

That’s a very restrained January haul. I am very excited for Murder on the Safari Star and The Gilded Ones (which I plan to pick up imminently). As usual, your list made me want to go out and buy more books.
