Top Ten Tuesday – Books that Give Off Summer Vibes

Good morning! It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post here on SWB! Today’s post is all about books that give off summer vibes! I’ve got a bit of a mixed bunch here, all from my TBR. Some are very obviously summery and some are summery to me because of certain memories I associate with summer. I’ve tried to explain some of my reasoning at each book!

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Books that Give Off Summer Vibes

Going Off Script by Jen Wilde

A TV writer’s room intern must join forces with her crush to keep her boss from ruining a lesbian character in this diverse contemporary YA romance from the author of Queens of Geek.

Seventeen-year-old Bex is thrilled when she gets an internship on her favorite tv show, Silver Falls. Unfortunately, the internship isn’t quite what she expected… instead of sitting in a crowded writer’s room volleying ideas back and forth, Production Interns are stuck picking up the coffee.

Determined to prove her worth as a writer, Bex drafts her own script and shares it with the head writer―who promptly reworks it and passes it off as his own! Bex is understandably furious, yet…maybe this is just how the industry works? But when they rewrite her proudly lesbian character as straight, that’s the last straw! It’s time for Bex and her crush to fight back.

Jen Wilde’s newest novel is both a fun, diverse love story and a very relevant, modern take on the portrayal of LGBT characters in media.

So the background on this cover may be fake, but green leaves and bright flowers say summer to me. The town I grew up in always had great summer displays in the public gardens!

Goodbye, Perfect by Sara Barnard

When I was wild, you were steady . . .
Now you are wild – what am I?

Eden McKinley knows she can’t count on much in this world, but she can depend on Bonnie, her solid, steady, straight-A best friend. So it’s a complete shock when, five days before the start of their GCSEs, Bonnie runs away with a guy Eden knows nothing about. And it’s the last person she would ever have expected.

As the days pass, and her world begins to unravel, Eden is forced to question everything she thought she knew about her best friend and herself

I think this is technically a flower however it reminds me of a sun, with its rays bursting through the clouds and who doesn’t associate the sun with summer?!

The Island by M. A. Bennett

Link is a fish out of water. Newly arrived from America, he is finding it hard to settle into the venerable and prestigious Osney School. Who knew there could be so many strange traditions to understand? And what kind of school ranks its students by how fast they can run round the school quad – however ancient that quad may be? When Link runs the slowest time in years, he immediately becomes the butt of every school joke. And some students are determined to make his life more miserable than others . . .

When a school summer trip is offered, Link can think of nothing worse than spending voluntary time with his worst tormentors. But when his parents say he can only leave Osney School – forever – if he goes on the trip, Link decides to endure it for the ultimate prize. But this particular trip will require a very special sort of endurance. The saying goes ‘No man is an island’ – but what if on that island is a group of teenagers, none of whom particularly like each other? When oppressive heat, hunger and thirst start to bite, everyone’s true colours will be revealed. Let the battle commence . . .

Okay, so crash landing and fighting for survival is not exactly a relaxing holiday but palm trees! That’s exotic and summery so it’s on the list!

The Summer Of Us by Cecilia Vinesse

Best friends Aubrey and Rae have been planning their European tour since the moment they met. It was meant to be the perfect way to spend their last summer together before university, but now it’s not just the two of them …

There’s Jonah, Aubrey’s seemingly perfect boyfriend, and Gabe, who Aubrey may have accidentally kissed. And there’s Clara, the friend Rae is crushing on, hard, even though there’s no hope because Clara is definitely into guys, not girls. and on top of all that Aubrey and Rae’s friendship appears to be falling apart. Things are a lot more complicated at eighteen than they were at ten …

Set off on a romantic adventure that embraces warm summer nights, the thrill of first kisses and the bittersweet ache of saying goodbye to the past.

This is one of my more obvious choice, I mean it has summer in the title, and is a gorgeous sky blue colour!

The Birds And The Bees by Milly Johnson

Love can sting. Or make you fly …

Romance writer and single mum Stevie Honeywell has only weeks to go to her wedding when her fiancé Matthew runs off with her glamorous new friend Jo MacLean. It feels like history repeating itself for Stevie, but this time she is determined to win back her man. She isn’t going to act as he might expect. She isn’t going to wail and dig her heels in, she is simply going to pretend to let him go whilst she pursues a mad course of dieting, exercising and self-improvement.

And it feels like history is repeating itself for Adam MacLean too, who is also determined to win his lady, Jo, back with the same basic psychological tactics. Then he is going to initiate his master plan: Getting together with Stevie to drive Jo wild with jealousy.

So, like the Scottish country jig ‘The Birds and the Bees’, the couples all change partners and learn some revealing truths about each other along the way. But what happens when Adam’s master plan actually starts to work? And just who will Stevie be dancing with when the music stops?

I’m not always the biggest contemporary fan, but for some reason the idea of sitting out in the garden, in the evening sun with a nice glass of wine and reading something like this is great summer vibes

The Last Summer Of Us by Maggie Harcourt

Limpet, Steffan and Jared. Three best friends crammed into a clapped-out rust bucket of a car on a whirlwind road trip to forget their troubles and see out the end of the summer. But no matter how far they drive, they can’t escape the hidden secrets and slow-burning romance that could upset the balance of their friendship – perhaps forever.

What I wouldn’t give to be able to go on a summer road trip right now! I’m not sure that’s happening anytime soon so I shall live it virtually by reading this!

Jungledrop by Abi Elphinstone

Eleven-year-old twins, Fox and Fibber, have been rivals for as long as they can remember. Only one of them will inherit the family fortune and so a race is afoot to save the dwindling Petty-Squabble empire and win the love of their parents.

But when the twins are whisked off to Jungledrop, a magical Unmapped Kingdom in charge of conjuring our world’s weather, things get wildly out of hand. An evil harpy called Morg is on the loose. And if she finds the long-lost Forever Fern before the twins, both Jungledrop and our world will crumble.

Suddenly, Fox and Fibber find themselves on an incredible adventure in a glow-in-the-dark rainforest full of golden panthers, gobblequick trees and enchanted temples. But, with the fate of two worlds in their hands, will the twins be able to work together for once to defeat Morg and her dark magic

Weather is a huge part of the British Summer, unfortunately more often than not it’s putting a bit of a dampener on it, so this book about the Unmapped Kingdom that’s responsible for creating our weather seems apt!

Happy Girl Lucky by Holly Smale

Introducing The Valentines. Fame – It Runs in the Family!

Sisters Hope, Faith and Mercy have everything: fame, success, money and beauty. But what Hope wants most of all is love, and it doesn’t matter how far she has to go to find it.

Except real-life isn’t like the movies. Even if you’re a Valentine…

This one is featured purely for the cover aesthetic. It looks summery to me!

The Highland Falcon Thief by M. G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman

Harrison Beck is reluctantly joining his travel-writer Uncle Nat for the last journey of the royal train, The Highland Falcon. But as the train makes its way to Scotland, a priceless brooch goes missing, and things suddenly get a lot more interesting. As suspicions and accusations run high among the passengers, Harrison begins to investigate and uncovers a few surprises along the way. Can he solve the mystery of the jewel thief and catch the culprit before they reach the end of the line?

Okay, so this is possibly the most obscure one on my list, near with me and I shall explain. The summer holidays for me were all about exploring the local area with my grandma and my little brother. Sometimes that was the local beach, or the beautiful countryside that surrounded the town I was lucky enough to grow up in. One of my favourite memories is our trips to Paignton, occasionally visiting the zoo, sometimes just playing crazy golf and visiting the pier, but also taking trips on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway. So that’s why this one has made my list!

The Paper & Hearts Society by Lucy Powrie

A brand new series from Booktuber Lucy Powrie – about what happens when you give up on trying to fit in and let your weird out! It’s time to join The Paper & Hearts Society …

Tabby Brown is tired of trying to fit in. She doesn’t want to go to parties – in fact, she would much rather snuggle up on the sofa with her favourite book.

It’s like she hasn’t found her people …

Then Tabby joins a club that promises to celebrate books. What could go wrong? EVERYTHING – especially when making new friends brings out an AWKWARD BUZZING feeling all over her body.

But Olivia, Cassie, Henry and Ed have something that makes Tabby come back. Maybe it’s the Austen-themed fancy-dress parties, or Ed’s fluffy cat Mrs Simpkins, or could it be Henry himself …

Can Tabby let her weird out AND live THE BEST BOOKISH LIFE POSSIBLE?

Another one mainly on the list because of the cover, it’s bright yellow screams summer sun to me!

There are 10 of the books on my TBR that give me summer vibes. Will I get to them all this summer? Given my track record it seems unlikely! Have you taken part in this week’s TTT? Let me know in the comments!
