Sarah’s Mini Reviews… Cormoran Strike

Good morning! At the weekend I was preparing my Lethal White review for sharing and it occured to me I never actually got around to publishing my reviews for the second and third books in the series, so I’m putting that right this morning before sharing my Lethal White review this afternoon.

In the second novel in the Strike series we join Cormoran as he tries to keep the agency afloat following the Luna Landry case, unsurprisingly lots of press attention is not beneficial to a private investigator whose career is somewhat dependant on retaining the ability to follow others discreetly. Mrs Quine approaches Strike and looks for his help in searching for her missing husband but before long a missing person case becomes a murder investigation.

I really enjoyed catching up with Robin and Strike again in this story, it was wonderful to read as their story developed. As a massive reader the book based plot was fascinating and I loved the chance to ‘go behind the scenes’ of the literary world. I will confess that the gruesomeness of the death in the story caught me slightly by surprise, but the plot kept me gripped right through to the last page

Career of Evil

It’s just another day in the office until Robin opens a package and uncovers a severed leg. Strike can think of four people from his past who could be responsible for sending the body part, all of them capable of horrific things. With the police increasingly focused on one suspect, it’s down to Strike and Robin to uncover who’s truly behind the crimes.

It’s safe to say that this book is dark and contains some difficult themes including child abuse which won’t be for everybody. I found the case to be gripping but it was the personal plots that really kept me glued to the book. Discovering more about Cormoran’s childhood was fascinating, and I became far too involved in Robin and Matthew’s relationship. I wasn’t keen on him before this book and the revelations in Career of Evil certainly did nothing to endear him to me! Cormoran and Robin both needed a good talking to by the end of the book, but the ending left me needing more.
