Six For Sunday: Summer Reads – Ice Cream and Book Combinations

Now what do you do with Steph gives you a Six for Sunday prompt about ice cream? Well if you went to the University of Dundee like I did you look across the water to St Andrews for inspiration! St Andrews is home to Jannettas Gelateria well known to those from Fife and further afield this incredible ice cream shop regularly produces over 50 flavours for customers to choose from so I’ve picked some of their flavours to inspire my book choices!

Ice Cream and Book Combinations

Vanilla – A Classic

Now some may say vanilla is a little boring but it is a classic flavour and therefore can only be accompanied by a classic book! I’m never entirely sure of the exact definition of a classic book, is it based on age or impact? Or a bit of both… I’m going to go with Pride & Prejudice not the most original of choices but still an enjoyable choice!

Mint Choc Chip – A Childhood Favourite

Mint choc chip ice cream was a regular choice for me growing up, some it’s only right I associate it with a book that was a childhood favourite. There are so many choices from this but I think I’m going to go with something I remember reading by myself at a relatively early age – the Sophie books by Dick King Smith

Cookie Dough Chip – A Comfort Read

If I’m having a bit of a rubbish time cookie dough chip is the ice cream flavour I reach for so it seems only right that I pick I book that I associate with happy memories whenever I pick it up, or even just think about it. So I’m picking Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone well the HP series in general. Not only did I get the joy of growing up with them, and the excitement that lead up to the publication date of each new book I also got to introduce my grandma to them who borrowed my copy from me to see what all the fuss was about and promptly made her way through the four books that were already released, we then got to enjoy the remaining books together. Now Harry Potter will always make me think of her even though she’s gone and that is priceless.

Orange and Mascarpone- A Luxury Combination

This flavour sounds wonderful and tastes AMAZING. I think it sounds rather luxurious so I’m picking a luxurious book – or two. My limited edition copies of Philip Pullman’s The Book Of Dust. La Belle Sauvage is already in my possession and I have The Secret Commonwealth on pre-order for October

Sky Blue – I Haven’t Got A Clue

Jannettas have a flavour called Sky Blue, it is in fact sky blue in colour but I’ve never been brave enough to try it so I have no idea what it actually tastes of! The Train To Impossible Places is a book I went into based on the cover and title alone after spotting it in the Overdrive app. I didn’t read the blurb so I had no idea what it was actually about but I absolutely loved it!

Mango Sorbet – Something A Little Different

Is there such a thing as too much ice cream? I think probably not, but every now and then a little change can be welcome and I do enjoy the odd sorbet instead, a little more refreshing perhaps! Now while I read pretty widely genre wise when it comes to YA fiction I tend to stick fairly solidly to crime, mystery and thrillers when it comes to adult fiction. Every now and then I make an exception and pick up something a little different. Ten Birthdays by Kerry Wilkinson is a contemporary novel I took a chance on and really enjoyed.
