Six For Sunday: Bookish Wishes – Books I Want To Be Written

It’s June which means it’s time for a new theme for the Six For Sunday posts. This month is all about our bookish wishes so look out for this month’s posts on characters who deserve another book, baddies who deserve their own story, couples who need a sequel, and characters I want to be friends with.

This week we’re starting off the theme with books I want to be written!

Books I Want To Be Written

I think my biggest challenge of this month is going to be not to repeat myself too often! So many of the books I want to see revolve around characters I love so below I’ve tried to be a little more creative and avoid things that also fit into the prompts due later this month.

So last weekend I read A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder and adored it! I know Holly signed a two book deal so there’s definitely more to come. I just want it now!

Devon based crime fiction

I love crime fiction, and I have a special fondness for books set in places I’m familiar with. Currently I live in Scotland and benefit from a lot of fantastic crime novels being set in and around the areas I live and work, but I would love to see more books set around Devon where I was born and grew up. I know the rural Westcountry isn’t the same hot bed of crime that you might find in the bigger cities, but if Midsomer Murders teaches us anything it’s that the rural idyll can be just deadly as any inner city.

Books about girls in STEM

I am a huge geek, loved maths and science at school! That said I don’t necessarily hit all the geeky stereotypes, love Star Wars but not really the biggest fan of Sci Fi in general or high fantasy. What I would love like to see though is more books about girls in STEM – be it younger girls studying STEM subjects or other women working in STEM jobs this would make me happy. I know there are some great books out there already, I loved Stargazing For Beginners and I’m looking forward to reading Screen Queens there’s always room for more!

Crossover fiction

Okay, this is a strange one but I will attempt to explain. There are two crime series in particular that I love, the Inspector McLean novels by James Oswald and the Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. What these two series have in common is that while they are police procedural crime fiction they both have hints of fantasy and the supernatural within them. I understand that not all genres would mix so readily but I’d love to see more mix ups!

YA thrillers

With books like One Of Us Is Lying and A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder it’s a area that’s certainly expanding, and being filled with wonderful books, there’s always room for more!

Crime from a different viewpoint

I know, I know I’m talking about crime again – forgive me but it is my favourite genre, and I do love a police procedural! Canelo and Bookouture publish some great ones FYI but I’d love to see more from other viewpoints. There are definitely some there, Val McDermid famously has a forensic psychologist as one of her lead characters and Kathy Reichs features a forensic anthropologist but give me more books where the lead character is a forensic scientist, or a pathologist or something a little different!
