Six For Sunday – Favourite Illustrator

It’s the second week of March’s An Ode To… prompts and this week is all about our favourite illustrators!

Favourite Illustrator

I have to confess my knowledge of illustrators is severely lacking, I’ve read very few modern picture books so most of the below are throwbacks to books I remember reading and loving the pictures from when I was a child with one exception!

Beatrix Potter

Peter Rabbit and his friends are well known across so many generations since he first appeared back in 1902. The original watercolours are so beautiful it slightly saddens me to think that newer generations will associate Peter Rabbit more with the CGI of the TV series or the live action film than the original drawings…

Jill Dow

I adored the Windy Edge Farm books and had two or three of them myself and borrowed others from the library. I loved seeing the farm come to life in Jill’s pictures alongside her text

Quentin Blake

I think I probably wouldn’t be misplaced in saying that Quentin Blake is probably most well known for his work illustrating Roald Dahl’s books. These books formed a huge part of my childhood, I remember Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Magic Finger were two of the first books I owned that I read by myself and Matilda will always have a special place in my heart thanks in no small part to Quentin’s illustrations.

David Parkins

David illustrated Dick King-Smith’s Sophie books. I loved the illustrations of Sophie, and I so identified with her out of control hair, and dislike of pink and frilly things!

Garry Parsons

Finally a modern book I hear you all cry! My best friend has two children and her youngest is just four, quite often if I’m visiting as the novelty adult in the house I’m asked to read a bedtime story and the Dinosaur That Pooped series was some of his favourites for a while and I’ve grown to love these pictures!

Alex Brychta

Alex had to make my list, he’s almost certainly not the most well known illustrator on my list, in fact I had to google it to find out his name, but he is responsible for the illustrations in a series of books that most children will probably know, the Magic Key books! Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the dog will always be in my mind as the central characters in the books that increased my reading confidence, and taught many of my friends to read at primary school.
