Middle School
I said in 2019 I wanted to read more recent middle grade so I could start passing amazing current books onto my God-daughter and not just buying her the books I adored as an 8 year old. Hotel Flamingo sounds like such a fun read, I’m not sure how I’d cope running the hotel but I’m looking forward to finding out how Anna manages! To Night Owl From Dogfish just sounds brilliant, I loved The Parent Trap when I was younger, I just hope I get enough of the characters to fall in love with them as apparently it’s all told by letter and email. Finally Storm Hound, Storm of Odin just sounds so cute! I think it’ll be an interesting read!
Hotel Flamingo – Alex Milway
Release Date: 7th February 2019
When young Anna inherits a dilapidated once-grand hotel from her Great Aunt Mathilde, she’s determined to restore it to its former glory. But this is no ordinary hotel – all of her staff and guests are animals! Anna soon rises to the challenge. Whether it’s a flamingo, a penguin or a hippo knocking at the door, Anna is ready to welcome them all – with the help of her trusty sidekicks T Bear the doorman, Squeak the friendly elevator mouse, and Lemmy the lemur receptionist … As she soon finds out, though, running an animal hotel is no easy task. Can Anna make Hotel Flamingo a success once more?

To Night Owl From Dogfish – Holly Goldberg-Sloan and Meg Wolitzer
Release Date: 21st February 2019
Avery Bloom, who’s bookish, intense, and afraid of many things, particularly deep water, lives in New York City. Bett Devlin, who’s fearless, outgoing, and loves all animals as well as the ocean, lives in California. What they have in common is that they are both twelve years old, and are both being raised by single, gay dads.
When their dads fall in love, Bett and Avery are sent, against their will, to the same sleepaway camp. Their dads hope that they will find common ground and become friends–and possibly, one day, even sisters.
But things soon go off the rails for the girls (and for their dads too), and they find themselves on a summer adventure that neither of them could have predicted. Now that they can’t imagine life without each other, will the two girls (who sometimes call themselves Night Owl and Dogfish) figure out a way to be a family?

Young Adult
February sees the release of Angie Thomas’s much anticipated follow up to The Hate You Give, and it sounds fantastic! Sarah Mussi’s latest novel already has me desperate to know the answer to ‘Who is Charlie?’ and Watch Us Rise sounds like such a timely and important novel.
On The Come Up – Angie Thomas
Release Date: 7th February 2019
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.
On the Come Up is Angie Thomas’s homage to hip-hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are and not who everyone expects you to be; and of the desperate realities of poor and working-class black families.

Watch Us Rise – Renée Watson and Ellen Hagan

They start posting everything from videos of Chelsea performing her poetry to Jasmine’s response to being reduced to a racist and sexist stereotype in the school’s theatre department. And soon, they’ve gone viral, creating a platform they never could’ve predicted.
With such positive support, the Women’s Rights Club is also targeted by trolls. But Jasmine and Chelsea won’t let their voices – or those of the other young women in their city – be silenced. They’ll risk everything to be heard and effect change … but at what cost?

Adult
James Oswald is one of my favourite – if not my favourite – crime authors at the moment, the last novel in the series had a particular tragic ending so how Tony deals with it should be an interesting read, plus more slightly fantastical crime in Edinburgh what’s not to love! Dirty Little Secrets sounds like Desperate Housewives and a proper guilty pleasure read and then comes Bitter Edge, the fourth book in the DI Kelly Porter series that I fell in love with in 2018!
Cold As The Grave – James Oswald
Release Date: 7th February 2019
Her mummified body is hidden in the dark corner of a basement room, a room which seems to have been left untouched for decades. A room which feels as cold as the grave.
As a rowdy demonstration makes its slow and vocal way along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Detective Chief Inspector Tony McLean’s team are on stand-by for any trouble. The newly promoted McLean is distracted, inexplicably drawn to a dead-end mews street… and a door, slightly ajar, which leads to this poor girl’s final resting place.
But how long has she been there, in her sleep of death? The answers are far from what McLean or anyone else could expect. The truth far more chilling than a simple cold case…

Ooh I did my most anticipated list today too and we have quite a few in common! I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on Storm Hound (I really liked Mirror Magic by the same author!) and I cannot wait for Happy Girl Lucky, The Star Spun Web and Song for a Whale too. I’ve already read a Pinch of Magic, and it’s absolutely fab. I really enjoy Michelle Harrison’s writing!
I’m definitely planning to read Jack of Hearts as well, and I will more than likely read the new Gracie Dart one as well. Fierce Fragile Hearts is phenomenal!
