2019 Sequels and More I’m Looking Forward To

It’s the second of my 2019 preview posts and this morning I’m focusing on sequels and other books continuing a series in 2019!

There’s no middle grade in post purely because I haven’t read enough to know about which series have new releases. If you know of a middle grade series I should read let me know in the comments!

Evermore

By Sara Holland – Orchard Books. Expected publication date: 31st December 2018. Book 2 of the Everless series.

Jules Ember was raised hearing legends of the ancient magic of the wicked Alchemist and the good Sorceress. But she has just learned the truth: She is the Alchemist, and Caro – a woman who single-handedly murdered the Queen and Jules’s first love, Roan, in cold blood – is the Sorceress.

I’m cheating slightly with this one as it’s technically a 2018 release but only just so I’m including it. I adored Everless and Evermore is already in my possession so I think this will be my first read of 2019

The Wicked King

By Holly Black – Hot Key Books. Expected publication date: 8th January 2019. Book 2 of The Folk of the Air series.

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Confession number one of this post I’ve not actually read The Cruel Prince yet but I own it and it’s got great Goodreads reviews so it’s making the list in the hope I get to both of them this year!

To Be Perfectly Honest

By Jess Vallance – Hot Key Books. Expected Publication date: 7th February 2019. Book 2 of the Gracie Dart series

Uncovering a family secret, Gracie decides she’s had enough of lies and pledges to be completely honest to everybody she meets. For fifty days, nothing but 100% brutal honesty at all times. 

But total honesty doesn’t always go down well when you’ve got a family dinner to go to, a job interview to get through and a new girlfriend to impress.

And when Gracie finally goes too far, she realises she’s going to have to think creatively if she’s going to put things right.

I can’t see this one on Goodreads yet but it’s in the Hot Key Books catalogue. You Only Live Once is sitting on my shelf and it’s another one I need to get to soon because I keep hearing rave reviews.

Corpse & Crown

By Alisa Kwitney – Inkyard Press. Expected publication date: 12th February 2019. Book 2 of the Cadaver & Queen series

From Alisa Kwitney comes a connected novel set in the same alternative Victorian England of Cadaver & Queen. Corpse & Crownfollows the story of Agatha DeLacey, an Ingold nursing student who travels to London and uncovers a devastating secret about the country’s Bio-Mechanicals. Inspired by the classic story of Oliver Twist and complete with a dashing Artful Dodger-inspired male lead, this retelling is a satisfying follow-up to Kwitney’s clever and critically acclaimed young adult debut.

So this is another with the first book in the series sitting unread on my shelf. But I love the concept and the cover so it’s making my list!

Chrysalis

by Brendan Reichs – G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers. Expected publication date: 5th March 2019. Book 3 of the Project Nemesis trilogy.

The 64 members of Fire Lake’s sophomore class have managed to survive the first two phases of the Program–and each other. Now, they alone have emerged into the dawn of a new era on Earth, into a Fire Lake valley that’s full of otherworldly dangers and challenges. This is the American publication date as I can’t find the UK date listed. I absolutely loved the first book in this trilogy, I’m struggling slightly with the second at the moment so I’m hoping the trilogy will go out with a bang in 2019!

A Girl Called Shameless

by Laura Steven – Electric Monkey. Expected publication date: 7th March 2019. The sequel to The Exact Opposite of Okay.

It’s been two months since a leaked explicit photo got Izzy involved in a political sex scandal – and the aftershock is far from over. The Bitches Bite Back movement is gathering momentum as a forum for teenage feminists, and when a girl at another school has a sex tape shared online, once again Izzy leads the charge against the slut-shamer. This time she wants to change the state law on revenge porn. 

Izzy and her best friend Ajita are as hilarious as ever, using comedy to fight back against whatever the world throws at them, but Izzy is still reeling from her slut-shaming ordeal, feeling angry beyond belief and wondering – can they really make a change? 

I know The Exact Opposite of Okay is arguably one of the most important books of 2018 and it’s in the January reading list I’m holding in my head. A Girl Called Shameless sounds just as important and timely.

Lady Smoke

by Laura Sebastian – Macmillan Children’s Books. Expected publication date: 2nd May 2019. Book 2 in the Ash Princess trilogy

The Kaiser murdered Theodosia’s mother, the Fire Queen, when Theo was only six. He took Theo’s country and kept her prisoner, crowning her Ash Princess–a pet to toy with and humiliate for ten long years. That era has ended. The Kaiser thought his prisoner weak and defenseless. He didn’t realize that a sharp mind is the deadliest weapon.

Theo no longer wears a crown of ashes. She has taken back her rightful title, and a hostage–Prinz Soren. But her people remain enslaved under the Kaiser’s rule, and now she is thousands of miles away from them and her throne.

To get them back, she will need an army. Only, securing an army means she must trust her aunt, the dreaded pirate Dragonsbane. And according to Dragonsbane, an army can only be produced if Theo takes a husband. Something an Astrean Queen has never done.

Theo knows that freedom comes at a price, but she is determined to find a way to save her country without losing herself.

In what is becoming a pattern I’ve not got round to reading Ash Princess yet but it’s sitting very prettily on by shelves and the sequel sounds amazing so I really need to get to it before May.

The Secret Commonwealth

by Philip Pullman – David Fickling Books. Expected publication date: Unknown. Book 2 in the Book of Dust trilogy.

I’m probably cheating including this one on the list as there’s no official publication date yet but I’m hopeful it will appear in 2019!

Cold As The Grave

by James Oswald – Wildfire. Expected publication date: 7th February 2019. Book 9 in the Inspector McLean series.

A new Inspector McLean novel is the highlight of my reading year, and I cannot wait for February!

The October Man

by Ben Aaronvitch – Gollancz. Expected publication date: 13th June 2019. A novella – book 7.5 in the Rivers of London series.

A brand new stand-alone novella in the Rivers of London series!
Tobias Winter has been assigned to the Abteilung KDA – the Department for Complex and Unspecific Matters.

Despite the intriguing department name, as Winter explains, dealing with the strange and the supernatural is ‘actually 90% paperwork’. But this is a story about the other 10% of the job: the life-threatening danger part.

This is a tale about the Queen of the Harvest, the October Man, and the little-known time the vineyard around Trier started to eat people . . .

Winter may be P. C. Peter Grant’s German counterpart, but surviving this investigation is entirely down to him . . .

This sounds really intriguing, I love the Rivers of London series but this sounds like it’s leaving Peter Grant behind to focus on a new character so I’ll be looking forward to seeing if he’s as likeable as my favourite pairing of Grant and Nightingale

The Wolves

by Daniel Cole – Trapeze. Expected publication date: 5th September 2019. Book 3 in the William Fawkes series.

Disgraced detective William ‘Wolf’ Fawkes returns to London after the shocking death of his mentor, retired detective Finlay Shaw.

Together with his former partner Detective Emily Baxter and private detective Edmunds, the reunited team begin to dig into Shaw’s early days on the beat. Time is running out as an internal investigation into Wolf’s past conduct gathers momentum.

Will Wolf and Baxter survive their toughest case yet?

I will hold my hands up everything above could be a load of rubbish because everywhere I look seems to have different information. Goodreads lists The Wolves but also an untitled 3rd book, neither of which have a synopsis, but Amazon does which is what I’ve included above. I loved Ragdoll and Hangman so while there’s rumours of the third book being published in 2019 it had to make the list.

The Testaments

by Margaret Atwood – Chatto & Windus. Expected publication date: 10th September 2019. Sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale.

The wait is over. 

And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light. 

When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her – freedom, prison or death. 

With The Testaments, the wait is over. 

Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. 

I pondered included this one on the list. I have no doubt it will be one of the biggest releases of 2019 but I’m unsure if I’ll actually read it. I read The Handmaid’s Tale as part of my English A Level and it both terrified and intrigued me, I’m a little concerned that not enjoying the sequel might ruin the original for me. It’s the same reason I’ve never read Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman.
