Sarah’s Mini Reviews – The Alistair Gunn Edit

I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday! This is one of my favourite weekends of the year as here in the UK the clocks go back overnight so I get an extra hour in bed!

Today I’m carrying on clearing my backlog of reviews by sharing some mini reviews of a series I read at the beginning of the year.

My Bloody Valentine

The second book in the DCI Antonia Hawkins sees us join Antonia as she’s still recovering from the injuries she received at the end of The Advent Killer. Faced with a brutal murder on Valentine’s Day Antonia must overcome her own issues as she battles to discover the killer before more people die.

I really enjoyed following Antonia’s recovery, and totally identified with the idea of getting back to work early because she was worried someone might take her job from her. The crimes were interesting and I enjoyed the flashback chapters giving a greater look into the history of the killer, and the twist at the end was great!

The Keeper

Back with Antonia for the third novel in the series the book begins with the discovery of a body buried in a shallow grave. Antonia and her team work to identify the victim and the killer and try to understand just why the killer keeps the victim for 24 hours before killing them. The case becomes more urgent as more bodies are discovered, the killer is playing a game and the police are losing.

Another great crime novel from Alastair Gunn, the case kept me gripped but one of the things I think I enjoy most about this series is the realism – Antonia was brutally attacked at the end of the first novel and while some series would have seen their main character brush it off and move on by the next book this series shows Antonia still struggling and being forced to take her counselling sessions seriously.

Once again Alastair Gunn finishes the story with a bang, he really is fantastic at the final act twist!

Three bodies and found in a depilated, old London flat. No one knows how they got there, and no one knows the obvious cause of death. Where they murdered or was it a suicide pact? D.I Antonia Hawkins and her team are set to investigate. Which brings her first to Stratham motors where they discover a drugs ring linked to one of the bodies. As the case progresses, more bodies turn up and links to the paranormal are discovered.

Another great book for crime fiction lovers this certainly isn’t a bright festive read. It’s dark, disturbing and ends on a tragic twist but well worth a read!
