Good morning everyone! Welcome to my new feature, Next Month We’re Loving…, in the last week of every month I’ll be featuring guest posts where fellow bloggers are able to share some of the books due for publication next month that they’re looking forward to.
So without further ado onto the first ever Next Month We’re Loving… featuring Donna from The Untitled Book Blog.
I’m one of those people who doesn’t really keep track of book release dates. I might know vaguely which month something is due out in, but mostly my attitude is that I’m in my local Waterstones pretty much every week so I’m going to come across anything I might want to read. But when Sarah asked if any bloggers had a book they were excited for coming out in August, I knew exactly which book I wanted to talk about!
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, by Mackenzi Lee, is YA historical, LGBTQ+ fiction, out in the UK on the 10th August, and I am DESPERATE to read it. It came out in the US in June, but even before that I was seeing it all over my twitter feed, and I haven’t yet seen a bad review for it. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve seen less than five stars for it anywhere, which really only makes the desperation more real. It’s the story of young aristocrat Monty, his best friend Percy, and his sister Felicity as they set off on a Grand Tour of Europe and I am incredibly excited for this book! Here’s why:
- It’s historical – the characters are on their Grand Tour, which was essentially an 18th Century road trip around Europe
- It is, by all accounts, hilarious
- It’s diverse – it has a bisexual, male main character, a biracial, male love interest who has a chronic illness, and an asexual, female character
- It gets the relationships right
- It doesn’t ignore the privilege Monty experiences as a rich, white man, or the difficulties that Percy and Felicity face
- There are pirates!
I mean, what else do you want in your YA fiction?! I think it looks seriously amazing, and I KNOW Mackenzi is amazing (check out her twitter feed @themackenzilee and bask in the glory of her #BadassBygoneBroads tweets every Friday). I’m not sure I’ve ever been as excited for a book as I am for Gentleman’s Guide, and I cannot wait to read it!
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is published in the UK by Katherine Tegen Books on 10th August
