This or That – 01/05/17

So this is usually a Monday post for me, but this Monday was the end of the bank holiday long weekend and I was staying with one of my best friends in Dundee, so by the time we finished watching American Gods and I got the train home it was late, and I was too tired to post so we’re two days late this week!

This week’s question…

Which genre do you prefer: Fantasy/sci-fi or mystery/thriller?

(Must choose one)

For me this is an easy choice – for as long as I can remember I have be a Crime / Mystery / Thriller reader. Right back to when I was little and collected all of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series. When I was 13 or 14 I bought myself The Complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and gained a copy of some of Edgar Allan Poe’s mystery stories. My shelves are filled with Ian Rankin, James Oswald and Val McDermid as well as Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen. I’m obsessed with Agatha Christie and started working my way through PD James after seeing Death In Holy Orders on TV. My TBR is also straining under the weight of even more mystery books I’m wanting to read – and I know it’s actually even worse than it appears as since I’ve started blogging I’ve discovered a few new series, so where I’ve only got one on my TBR and know there’s more to be added!

As for Fantasy I’ve never been a biggest fan. My dad read The Hobbit to me as a bedtime story when I was little but it wasn’t for me, to this day I’ve never read or fully watched any of The Lord Of The Rings or The Game Of Thrones. One of my closest friends enjoys fantasy and regularly tries to convert me, hence watching American Gods but I’m still not sure. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule growing up I was obsessed with Harry Potter (and lets be honest I still am!). I’ve also read a few crime series which have a supernatural / fantasy twist that I would definitely recommend – the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch and the Inspector McLean series by James Oswald – both series have wonderfully narrated audiobooks too which was a bonus for me!

So are you a mystery or a fantasy fan? Or is it just too close for you to call? Also if you know a fantasy novel you think could convert me let me know in the comments!

I’m definitely a fantasy fan. Not so much high fantasy though. Mostly Dark urban fantasy. I don’t usually read mysteries but when I do I mostly enjoy them [I usually go for hyped ones though to make sure :)]
